Introducing Toy Story Land

Toy Story Land officially opens today at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  The 11-acre addition provides some much-needed new attractions to keep you entertained until Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens late next year.

However, don’t think just because Toy Story Land is the appetizer to the Star Wars entrée that Disney just phoned it in on the new land.  The truth is quite the opposite.  Disney has created a fun, family-friendly area of the park that could potentially act as the start of a much larger Pixar presence.

While I won’t be able to make opening weekend, here are the 5 things I’m most looking forward to when I do get the chance to visit Hollywood Studios.

Slinky Dog Dash

Slinky Dog Dash is the new major attraction in Toy Story Land.  This coaster is themed to appear like Andy built it using his Dash & Dodge Mega Coaster Kit.

Riders find themselves being launched around the track as the titular character.  Along the way, you’ll see some familiar faces like Jesse and Rex.  The ride looks like a blast for both kids and adults alike.  Plus, there is an audio-animatronic Wheezy the Penguin at the end of the ride.

You can check out a POV of the roller coaster below.

Pretend You’re a Toy

Not only is Slinky Dog Dash themed to make you believe it’s a toy set, but the entire Toy Story Land is themed around Andy’s backyard.

Similar to Bug’s Land over in Disneyland, Toy Story Land shrinks you down to the size of a toy.  From this perspective, everything appears larger than life.

Andy’s footprint in the land is around 25 feet long, which would take the Green Army Men around 12 steps to travel!

Pretending you’re a toy will only add to the immersion and fun you can have in this new area.

Toy Story Mania!

Toy Story Mania! isn’t new, it’s the same ride as Toy Story Midway Mania just with a new name.  Along with the new name comes a new front entrance that fits in with the theme of Andy’s backyard.

So why am I excited about a ride that isn’t new?

Because it’s an incredibly fun ride!

The 4-D attraction has been extremely popular ever since it opened in early 2008.  The ride includes five carnival style mini-games, including Hamm & Eggs and Buzz Lightyear’s Flying Tossers.  There’s nothing better than challenging your friend to see who can earn the higher score.

If you’ve never ridden it before, it’s a must do.  Plus now that Slinky Dog Dash is open you may actually have a chance of getting a Fast Pass!

Alien Swirling Saucers

Set inside a play set that Andy won at Pizza Planet, the Aliens are ready to take you for a ride.

The ride is part whip ride, part Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree.

Complete with lighting and sound effects, this ride looks like a blast as you ride in a saucer and try to avoid being captured by the claw.

Woody’s Lunch Box

No new theme park land would be complete without food.  After a long day of riding and pretending I’m a toy, I know I’ll be ready to check out some of this delicious food.

  • S’more French Toast breakfast sandwich.  Oozy goodness in a chocolate ganache- and marshmallow-stuffed French toast topped with graham cracker crumbles. Inspired by the classic American campfire treat.
  • Grilled three-cheese sandwich. To ensure a soft gooey middle, Disney chefs created a sharp cheddar cream cheese spread, layered in provolone and cheddar and wrapped the sandwich in garlic butter-grilled French bread.
  • BBQ brisket melt. With a nod to cowboy Woody, this Texas-style smoked brisket features cheddar, Monterey Jack, pickles, BBQ sauce and garlic butter-grilled sourdough.
  • Totchos. Bite-sized potato barrels, corn chips, chili and queso. ‘Nuf said.
  • Lunch box tarts. A modern interpretation of a breakfast toaster pastry as a hand-held dessert, these feature a uniquely delicate crust. Layer in high-quality ingredients for fillings, add a decorative garnish, and these tasty tarts beat anything mom packed. Choice of Raspberry Lunch Box Tart garnished with Icing and Dried Fruit and Chocolate-Hazelnut Lunch Box Tart garnished with Icing and Caramelized Bacon.
